Abstract

Gardenia (Gardenia augusta) is one of Indonesia's medicinal plants. all parts of the gardenia plant can be used for human life. Gardenia leaves have the ability as anticarcinogenesis and antimicrobial. Phytochemical analysis of gardenia leaf extract showed the presence of chemical compounds contained in the ethanol leaf extract of gardenia leaves, namely: alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins. The purpose of this study was to determine the inhibition test of the ethanolic extract of gardenia leaves (Gardenia augusta) in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis. This research is a laboratory experiment using the Diffusion method (Kirby & Bauer), kanamycin disk as a positive control, DMSO as a negative control and concentration of 2,5%, 5%, 10% and 20%. Based on this study, the results of the inhibition of ethanol extract of gardenia leaves on the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis at concentrations of 2.5%, 5%, 10% and 20% were 6 mm, 6 mm, 6 mm, and 6,7mm. Based on the result of research that has been done, ethanol extract of gardenia leaves (Gardenia augusta) at concentrations of 2.5%, 5%, and 10% was not able to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria, while at 20% concentration it was able to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria with an average inhibition zone of 6.7 mm is still said to be in the category of moderate inhibition zone.
